Dr Hans Raj Bhardwaj

Dr Hans Raj Bhardwaj (07-08th March 2020), former Governor of Karnataka (2009-2014) and Kerala(2012-13), former Minister of Law and Justice (2004-2009), an inspirational leader, eminent lawyer, humanitarian, educationist, and politician, leaves behind a remarkable legacy. A lawyer by profession, designated as Senior Advocate by the Supreme Court of India on 07.03.2000, Dr Bhardwaj was born in Village Garhi, P.O. Sampla, District Rohtak, Haryana. He completed his schooling at G.B.C. High School, Rohtak, and pursued higher education at B.M. College, Shimla, and also at Agra University, and Punjab University, obtaining his M.A, LLB Doctorate.

In a legal and political career spanning over five decades, Dr Bhardwaj was widely credited with possessing an acute appreciation for the intersection between law and politics. A five-time Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha, 1982- 2009), Dr Bhardwaj served under Prime Ministers Sh. Rajiv Gandhi, Sh P V Narsimha Rao, and Dr Manmohan Singh.

During his tenure, Dr Bhardwaj served as Minister of Law and Justice (Minister of State,1984-1989), Sr. Vice President, Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies (1984-1989), Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Planning and Programme Implementation (1991-1992), Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs (Minister of State,1992-1996), Parliamentary Committee of Privileges (Rajya Sabha,1998-2004), Committee on Home Affairs (2000), Advisory Council of the Delhi Development of Authority (2002-2004), Business Advisory Committee (2004-2009).

Dr Bhardwaj has authored various books including ‘Law, Lawyers & Judges’ (1997)’Crime, Criminal Justice & Human Rights; (2001)’Soul of India:’ Nehru: Gazing at Tomorrow; (2014)’With Three Prime Ministers: Reminiscences:(2016) and’ Politics, Religion and Judiciary in India(2018).

Dr Bhardwaj also played a founding role in establishing the International Centre for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ICADR) and has been at the helm of legal and judicial reforms, including women’s right to property, the introduction of rural courts for doorstep justice, reservation for women in the House of the People (Lok Sabha) and legislative assemblies, perks and privileges for the judiciary, etc.

Dr Bhardwaj is survived by his wife, Smt. Dr Prafullata Bhardwaj, his son Shri Arun Bhardwaj (Senior Advocate), daughters Smt. Vandita and Smt. Vineeta, and grandchildren Shri Karn Bhardwaj (Advocate) and Shri Gautam Bhardwaj (Advocate).

Hon’ble Justice Mr Ashok Mathur

Ashok Kumar Mathur (born 7 August 1943) the former Chief justice of Calcutta High Court, Justice of the Supreme Court of India. He was appointed as the Chairman of the 7th Pay Commission. He started his law career in the Rajasthan High Court in 1967. Initially, he worked as Government Advocate.

He was elevated as Judge on 13 July 1985 of the Rajasthan High Court. He was transferred from Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Calcutta High Court on 22 December 1999 as Chief Justice. Mathur became a judge of the Supreme Court in2004and retired from service on 7 August 2008 there. After his retirement, he was appointed as the Chairman of the 7th Central Pay Commission (CP) and Defence Forces and also headed the Armed Forces Tribunal.

Dr Shashi Tharoor

Dr Shashi Tharoor is an Indian politician, writer, and a former international diplomat who is currently serving as a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, since 2009. He also serves as Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information Technology and All India Professionals Congress.

In 2019, Dr Tharoor received the Sahitya Academy Award for his book ‘An Era of Darkness’ in a non-fiction category in the English language. Born in London, UK, and raised in India, He graduated from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi in 1975 and culminated his studies in 1978 with a doctorate in International Relations and Affairs from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University.

At the age of 22, he was the youngest person at the time to receive such an honor from the Fletcher School. From 1978 to 2007; Dr Tharoor was a career official at the United Nations, rising to the rank of Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information in 2001. He is an acclaimed writer, having authored 18 best-selling works of fiction and non-fiction since 1981, which are centered on India and its history, culture, film, politics, society, foreign policy, and more related themes.
