SONEPAT: Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Law University (DBRANLU), Sonepat, is enhancing the landscape of legal education with the establishment of The Centre for Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution. This Centre is dedicated to exploring, engaging, and evolving practices in mediation, arbitration, and conciliation, fostering not only a strong theoretical understanding but also practical skills among students.
Opening the dialogue at the recent seminar, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Archana Mishra remarked on the significance of the new Centre, "The establishment of the Centre is a testament to our dedication to creating a future where legal professionals are not only well-versed in the law but are also equipped with the necessary skills to manage and resolve disputes constructively," she stated, emphasizing the university's commitment to innovative legal resolution strategies.
The Centre is set to organise its Mediation Training Program, a pivotal initiative emerging from a collaboration with the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. Alongside this program, DBRANLU and the Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti will collaboratively establish designated mediation centres, aiming to impart essential mediation skills for effective conflict resolution.
On Saturday, 16th December 2023, a riveting discussion titled “Role of Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution Under the Present International Scenario" was conducted. Gracing the event as host was Prof. (Dr.) Archana Mishra, and as Chief Guest, Hon’ble Justice Karunanand Bajpayee, Judicial Member of the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Government of India, and Former Judge of the Allahabad High Court.
The seminar also featured a distinguished panel of guests: Mr. Anubhav Sharma, Judicial Member of the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal; Mr. Nikhil Chopra, Coordinator of the Delhi International Arbitration Centre; Mr. Dharmendra Rana, Registrar General of the Armed Forces Tribunal; and Dr. Jwala Prasad, Director of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti at the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
The Chief Guest, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Karunanand Bajpayee, shared his insights on the Mediation Act of 2023, enlightening the future legal practitioners present.
Mr. Anubhav Sharma spoke to the student attendees, emphasizing the importance of expedited court procedures for the ease of doing business. Mr. Nikhil Chopra reminisced about India's rich history of arbitration and mediation, citing examples from Hindu mythology and the role of local bodies in resolving disputes.
The speakers addressed the urgency of tackling the backlog of court cases in India. Mr. Dharmendra Rana pointed out the roughly 5 crore cases pending in courts, affecting the constitutional promise of timely justice.
Dr. Jwala Prasad, in his speech, accentuated the significance of Gandhian principles in mediation and dispute resolution. He also highlighted his role as Director of Gandhi Smriti and Darshan Samiti, underscoring the organization's collaboration with DBRANLU in fostering these principles within the realm of legal conflict resolution.
The seminar's success was further accentuated by Prof. (Dr.) Ashutosh Mishra, Dean, Academic Affairs and Director of the Centre for Conflict Management and Dispute Resolution, who commended his team for organizing over ten insightful lectures in a short span and announced the introduction of new courses and the launch of the university's journal, marking significant academic advancements.
