In a landmark initiative to enhance legal learning through real-world insights, Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University (RPNLU), Prayagraj, under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor Sr. Prof. (Dr.) Usha Tandon, launched a thought-provoking interactive series titled “Beyond the Judgements.”

The new series aims to offer students an opportunity to understand the values, experiences, and nuanced perspectives of judicial luminaries beyond courtroom verdicts. The initiative aligns with the university's mission to deliver holistic and experiential legal education.

Inaugural Session with Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Bhansali

The first episode featured a candid conversation with Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Bhansali, Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court. Moderated by a student team comprising Ms. Stuti Mishra, Sujal Sonker, and Ms. Khushi Shandilya, the session delved deep into Justice Bhansali’s professional journey, judicial philosophy, and personal passions.

Justice Bhansali, a third-generation lawyer who began practice in 1989, reflected on the evolution of the legal profession—from physical libraries to digital databases. He raised pertinent concerns about the lack of stipends for junior lawyers, while emphasizing the unmatched value of mentorship under senior advocates.

Judicial Insights and Career Reflections

Sharing his experience across Rajasthan and Allahabad High Courts, he explained the broader responsibilities of a Chief Justice, stating:

“As a judge, your only responsibility is to deliver justice. As Chief Justice, you must also manage the administrative machinery of the entire High Court and district judiciary.”

He further highlighted the historical connection between the Rajasthan and Allahabad High Courts, with the first three Chief Justices of Rajasthan originating from Allahabad.

Justice Bhansali addressed the tension between legal reasoning and public opinion, reaffirming the judiciary’s duty to uphold legal doctrines over populist sentiment. He candidly shared that judges must be ready to recuse themselves if personal beliefs conflict with objective adjudication.

Landmark Case and Personal Hobbies

He recounted a memorable judgment where he ruled in favour of a physically challenged woman whose candidature was wrongly rejected, demonstrating his commitment to justice for the marginalized.

On a personal note, Justice Bhansali opened up about his childhood passion for philately (stamp collection) and gardening. He proudly shared anecdotes about obtaining autographs from dignitaries like Mother Teresa, Prince Charles, and the Dalai Lama, turning stamp covers into unique historical artifacts.

Views on Legal Reform and Gender Equality

Calling for increased judicial appointments and speedier justice, Justice Bhansali also warned against the misuse of the term “transparency,” when it threatens judicial independence and confidentiality.

He shared his views on gender equality, referencing a key judgment where he stated:

“A son continues to be a son both before and after marriage; a daughter continues to be a daughter irrespective of being married or unmarried.”

Encouraging women in law, he stressed the need for building strong partnerships early in their careers.

Message to Law Students

Concluding the session, Justice Bhansali, as the Hon’ble Chancellor of RPNLU, offered a heartfelt message:

“There is no substitute for hard work and patience. Many brilliant people lose their way due to impatience. Patience helps avoid conflict and leads to success.”

A New Chapter in Legal Learning

The inaugural edition of “Beyond the Judgements” successfully bridged the gap between legal education and practical wisdom, leaving students inspired and intellectually enriched. The series marks a significant step in promoting value-based legal education at RPNLU, Prayagraj.
