About GLC Mumbai
Government Law College enjoys the distinction of being the oldest law school in Asia and has, since its inception in 1855, essayed a seminal role in the evolution of India’s legal and judicial landscape. Any discussion of India’s legal system and culture today is incomplete, in fact, meaningless without a mention of Government Law College, Mumbai. Looking back over the years, one realises the immeasurable role this pioneering law institution has played in India’s judicial, political and historical life. Government Law College, with its illustrious history and a heritage spanning over a century and a half, has nurtured some of the greatest minds of today, not only in the field of law but in various other walks of life.
About SPIL Mumbai
In an increasingly integrated world, with growing transnational interactions, the significance of international law has never been greater. International events have come to dominate the domestic landscape. In order to understand the tumultuous nature of international relations and to promote a greater awareness and understanding of international law, the students at Government Law College, Mumbai formed Students for the Promotion of International Law, Mumbai (SPIL, Mumbai) in the year 2009.
We at SPIL, Mumbai, strive towards taking legal studies to an empirical level and promoting law as an area of enquiry and study far beyond the realms of classrooms. We as a student-based organisation, seek to encourage communication and cooperation among students and lawyers internationally. SPIL Mumbai relentlessly strives to provide greater opportunities for comprehensive studies of international cultures and legal systems, to facilitate global interactions and to publicise educational and career opportunities in international law.

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is a powerful engine of economic advancement, but it often raises complex questions about environmental protection and regulatory frameworks. This discussion will delve into how countries can attract investment while upholding environmental standards and promoting sustainable practices.
Our Panel brings together esteemed experts, policymakers, and industry leaders who will share insights into the dynamics of environmental regulations and FDI. About the Panelists
Our distinguished panelists bring a wealth of expertise and experience in international law. Each speaker has been invited for their contribution to the field and will offer valuable perspectives on this key topic of discussion.
- Ms. Anita Varadharajan - A recent LLM graduate, with an academic journey starting from Journalism, to Liberal Arts, and Law. Before diving into law, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism, where she discovered the power of storytelling to inspire sustainable change, and proceeded to work at Ashoka University in the Media Department. She has had the privilege of organising India’s first Animal Law Webinar Series and mentoring amazing students at NALSAR University while working at the Animal Law Centre after graduating from Symbiosis Law School in 2021. With an LLM from National Law University, Odisha, and a Liberal Arts background from Ashoka University, her research experience encompasses domestic violence adjudication, industrial animal agriculture, public health and climate change laws. Her academic and career pursuits have been about connecting the dots and weaving narratives between law, society, and the natural world, with an interest in laws that face human, non-human and environmental interests.
- Ms. Litisha Bagadia - Founder of Ayika Foundation, an environmental action education non-profit. She is an international entrepreneur, with chapters of her non-profit in Delhi, Srinagar, Rajkot, New Jersey, and Mumbai. She has received national media features in The Economic Times, Midday, and Navbharat Times and has shared her journey as a TEDx speaker. She is the recipient of the prestigious Diana Award, the highest honour in the world for social and humanitarian work conferred by The Royal Family in the UK, and the Social Reformer of the Year award by Cabinet Minister Piyush Goyal. She is currently leading a behavioural change intervention toward sustainability in the Mumbai slums of Dharavi and Dahisar.
- Mr. Rishi Aggarwal: An environmental activist who has been active with the goal of sustainable development, especially sustainable cities for 25 years. He has worked on numerous issues in the city. He has been involved with numerous organisations for over 20 years. He founded the Mumbai Sustainability Centre in 2016. In 2012, He founded the Walking Project, an advocacy group dedicated to enhancing pedestrian safety and convenience in Indian cities. Through this initiative, he has successfully mobilised stakeholders, developed pilot projects, and facilitated knowledge exchange to foster a more pedestrian-friendly urban environment. His expertise also extends to waste management. He served as Program Manager for OYE Ambala in 2017, where he played a pivotal role in launching a waste segregation initiative for the city, aimed at achieving 30% segregation at source within 90 days.
- Ms. Sumaira Abdulali, Convenor, Awaaz Foundation - An environmental activist focusing on sand mining and noise pollution. She is the founder of the NGO Awaaz Foundation. Sand mining, which has now become an issue of global concern was first reported by her to the authorities after she noticed sand being illegally mined from Kihim Beach in 2004, where she was physically attacked during a sand mining site inspection. Thereafter, she convened an NGO movement for the protection of public-interest activists, ‘Movement against Intimidation, Threat and Revenge against Activists’ (MITRA) and filed the first public interest litigation against sand mining, resulting in policy change at State and national levels. She helped bring sand mining to notice worldwide by participating in documentary films and awareness campaigns and contributing to print, radio and television news.
