About Webinar on Forensic Facial Reconstruction

In this webinar, Mark Watke would discuss his research into forensic art and face prediction through integrating quantitative data components with digital methods for craniofacial reconstruction. His research reveals 30 areas in which current, digital forensic art methods produce 3D models outside documented ranges of anatomical data. His presentation would illustrate the need for quantitative anatomical data when reconstructing the muscles of facial expression, deep and superficial fat compartments, subcutaneous fat, masticatory muscles, eyes, nose, and nasal cartilages for facial prediction and identification.

Target Audience

  • Law Students
  • Law School Faculty Members

About the Speaker

While the discipline of forensic art is already more than a century old, a degree program in the fusion of forensic science and art was only introduced to academic university curricula about a decade ago with the advent of the Master of Science course in Forensic Art & Facial Imaging at the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at the University of Dundee, Scotland, UK. During this same time period, Mark Watke has blended his interests in anatomy with his passion for art.

As a craniofacial anatomist working in criminalistics, he has focused on the soft tissues that create the uniqueness of the human face. Recently he completed the Master of Science in Forensic Art & Facial Imaging where he conducted a comparative study of two procedures using 3D anatomical models in craniofacial reconstruction: a classical method and his own quantitative anatomically-based approach. The study confirmed that using quantitative anatomical data produced 3D models that improved craniofacial reconstruction accuracy and increased the likelihood of successful identification.

Since completing the requirements for the MSc degree, he has been conducting further research in the quantitative dimensions of the soft tissue components of the human face. Mark Watke completed the MSc in Forensic Art & Facial Imaging at the University of Dundee, UK, the Bachelor of Fine Arts with a major in Art at Augusta University, US, and a Certificate in Web Page Design at Aiken Technical College, US.
