About All India Bar Examination (AIBE)
The All India Bar Examination (AIBE) is a mandatory test conducted by the Bar Council of India (BCI) to assess an advocate’s ability to practice law. The exam covers knowledge of substantive and procedural law and professional ethics. Once a candidate clears the AIBE, they receive a "Certificate of Practice" from the BCI, allowing them to practice law in India.
The AIBE ensures that all practicing lawyers possess the necessary legal acumen and ethical standards required to practice law efficiently.
Eligibility for AIBE
Eligibility of Final-Year Law Students (Without Backlogs):
- Final-year students of 3-year or 5-year LL.B. courses at BCI-recognised universities/colleges can register for AIBE.
- Must have no backlogs from previous semesters to qualify.
Eligibility of Law Graduates Without Degree:
- Graduates of 3-year or 5-year LL.B. courses from BCI-recognised universities/colleges, even if they haven't received their degree yet, are eligible for AIBE. Includes graduates awaiting degree conferral.
Eligibility of Graduates Without Enrollment or With Surrendered Certificates:
- Candidates who have obtained their LL.B. degree from a BCI-recognised University or BCI-approved College but have not enrolled with any State Bar Council, as well as those who had enrolled but have surrendered their enrolment certificates, are also eligible to apply.
No Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for appearing in AIBE.
Number of Attempts: There is no restriction on the number of attempts. Candidates can appear in AIBE as many times as needed to qualify.
Exam Pattern for AIBE
(I) Mode of Exam: AIBE is conducted in an offline mode (pen-and-paper-based).
(III) Number of Questions: The test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions.
(IV) Marking Scheme:
- Each correct answer is awarded one mark.
- There is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
(V) Medium of Exam: AIBE is conducted in multiple languages, including English and Hindi, along with several regional languages. Candidates can choose the language of their preference while applying.
(VI) Carry only Bare Acts: Earlier, AIBE was conducted in an open-book format. However, in recent exams, the rules have changed, and candidates are allowed to take bare acts without notes.
