DNLU Hosts Successful National Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Collaboration with the Law Commission of India

Inauguration and Keynote Address

The conference was inaugurated in the gracious presence of Chief Guest Hon’ble Shri Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of M.P. In his keynote address, Hon’ble Justice Sachdeva shared extensive insights into the judicial implications of artificial intelligence. He emphasized that India is still at the early stages of regulating AI and highlighted various legal issues that current laws are not equipped to handle, particularly in the judiciary.

Welcome Address by Vice Chancellor

Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice Chancellor of DNLU, welcomed the dignitaries, guests, and students. He discussed the lack of expertise in dealing with AI and mentioned the Bar Council of India's (BCI) recommendation for law schools to introduce new subjects in line with the National Education Policy to integrate technology and collaborate with all legal stakeholders.

Insights from Law Commission of India

Dr. Reeta Vasishta, ILS Member Secretary of the Law Commission of India, addressed the gathering, appreciating the judiciary's efforts to integrate AI into their system for tasks such as translating documents into regional languages and managing the National Judicial Data Grid with the help of the IT Ministry. She posed critical questions about AI's influence on human decision-making, potential biases, and the challenges of replacing human judgment.

Conference Sessions

The conference featured several sessions covering various topics related to AI, deep fakes, and regulatory frameworks. Prominent sessions included:

• AI in the Context of Deep Fakes: Featuring panelists Prof. (Dr.) Anand Paliwal, Prof. (Dr.) Raka Arya (Part-Time Member LCI), Prof. (Dr.) Pritee Khanna (Professor In-charge, IIITDM), and Dr. Gargi Chakrabarti (Associate Professor, DNLU).
• Legal Challenges and India’s Approach to Regulating AI & the Future: Featuring panelists Prof. D.P. Verma (Member LCI), Shri Anoop Nair (Senior Advocate, High Court of M.P.), Prof. (Dr.) Aparajita Ojha (Professor, IIITDM), and Dr. Ashit Srivastava (Assistant Professor of Law, DNLU).

Valedictory Address

The conference concluded with the valedictory address by Hon’ble Shri Justice Vishal Dhagat, Judge of the High Court of M.P. His closing remarks encapsulated the discussions and provided a forward-looking perspective on integrating AI into various sectors while maintaining ethical standards. He highlighted that AI possesses intelligence but not wisdom, urging the need to keep creativity to humans and manual tasks to AI.

Acknowledgements and Participation

The valedictory session featured a welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Bhartendu K. Singh, Director of IIITDM, and addresses from Hon’ble Shri Justice K.T. Sankaran (Member of the Law Commission of India).

The sessions were moderated by Dr. Manwendra Kumar Tiwari (Associate Professor of Law) and Mr. Shashank Pathak (Assistant Professor of Law). Dr. Praveen Tripathi (Associate Professor of Law & Dean of Student Welfare) and Prof. (Dr.) Shailesh N. Hadli (Registrar, DNLU) delivered the vote of thanks.

The conference saw participation from local institutes and universities, including RDVV, Shri Ram Group Jabalpur, Manglayatan University, St. Aloysius Law College, Hitkarni Law & Engineering College, and Mother Teresa Law College.
