Jabalpur, August 22, 2024 – Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU) Jabalpur has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Prayas Institute of Juvenile Justice (PIJJ) to collaborate on advancing legal education and addressing critical issues within the Juvenile Justice System.

A Collaboration to Enhance Legal Education and Juvenile Justice System

Dharmashastra National Law University (DNLU) Jabalpur has recently strengthened its academic and social outreach through a significant partnership. The university, known for its commitment to academic excellence and holistic development, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Prayas Institute of Juvenile Justice (PIJJ). This collaboration is aimed at advancing legal education and addressing critical issues within the Criminal & Juvenile Justice System.

About Dharmashastra National Law University

Established in 2018 under the Madhya Pradesh Dharmashastra National Law University Act, DNLU has quickly become a beacon for legal education in India. The institution is guided by the Hon’ble Judge of the Supreme Court of India, Shri Justice J.K. Maheshwari, as its Visitor, and the Hon’ble Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, as its Chancellor. Under the leadership of Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha as Vice-Chancellor, DNLU offers comprehensive programs including B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M., and Ph.D. programs.

Overview of Prayas Institute of Juvenile Justice

Prayas Institute of Juvenile Justice (PIJJ), a unit of Prayas Juvenile Aid Centre Society, was founded in 1988 by the then Commissioner of Police, Delhi, with Mr. Amod K. Kanth as the founder General Secretary. Currently led by Ms. Indu Rani Singh as the Executive Director, Prayas is a national-level non-profit organization focusing on child, youth, and women-centric community-based services. With a network of 252 Centres and Units across 12 States/Union Territories, Prayas directly serves nearly 50,000 beneficiaries daily. Its programs include education, life skills, health services, juvenile justice, child protection, and economic empowerment for marginalized and vulnerable groups.

Objectives of the MoU

The MoU between DNLU and Prayas aims to leverage their respective expertise to promote a cooperative working relationship in areas of common interest. The partnership will provide students with valuable opportunities for internships and recruitment, particularly in specialized areas such as Child Rights, Child Protection, Juvenile Justice, and the Laws related to children. Additionally, the collaboration will focus on addressing critical issues such as trafficking of women and children, child labour, and bonded labour.

Promoting Legal Education and Social Justice

Through this partnership, DNLU and Prayas will engage in various thematic activities to educate and empower stakeholders, particularly in the areas of juvenile justice and child protection. This collaboration represents a significant step forward in the university's mission to uphold the rule of law and contribute to the betterment of society by addressing pressing social issues.
