Hon'ble Mr. Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ravi Shanker Jha, Former Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court, Smt. Meenakshi Lekhi, Former Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Shri Shailesh Tripathi, Director of the Commercial Channel at HP India shared profound insights on Artificial Intelligence's transformative role and implications in the Indian judicial system at an Event organized by Law Centre-II, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi.

New Delhi, October 18, 2024 - The Law Centre II, Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, in association with HP Microworld and event partner CPRLI, organized a National Workshop and Capacity Development Program on "Artificial Intelligence: Techno-Legal Perspective." Conducted in a hybrid mode, the one-day event was organized in two comprehensive sessions covering inaugural and technical aspects. The workshop saw wide participation, providing an excellent platform for attendees to benefit from the insights of distinguished experts.

The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Prof. (Dr.) Anupam Jha, Professor InCharge, Law Centre II, University of Delhi, who expressed gratitude to the esteemed guests and contributors for their insights. In this session, We were privileged to host Hon'ble Mr. Justice S. Ravindra Bhat, former Justice of the Supreme Court, as the chief guest of the event. He discussed artificial intelligence with a practical perspective, emphasizing that while AI holds

"We should not be fearful of AI, nor should we be alarmist; we should be alive to what it is capable of, alive to its limitations, and conscious of what we can do with it. It has to remain a tool and never a master."

Justice Bhat's words served as a reminder that AI should be approached thoughtfully, recognizing its capabilities while setting necessary limitations to ensure it enhances, rather than overtakes, human decision-making.

Adding to the discourse, Hon'ble Mr. Justice Ravi Shanker Jha, Former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, encouraged attendees to embrace AI advancements with an open mind while always prioritizing human intelligence. He inspired the audience to rely on their analytical and intellectual growth beyond AI's influence, reminding them to cultivate a habit of deep reading, power to analyze and critical thinking.

Following him, Ms. Meenakshi Lekhi, Senior Advocate and Former Union Minister of State for External Affairs, served as the Special Guest of Honor, emphasizing the need for robust statutory controls to manage AI responsibly. She pointed out that unchecked AI usage could lead to adverse outcomes and stressed the importance of implementing transparent algorithms to maintain ethical integrity, ensuring that AI remains a beneficial tool.

The objective of the workshop was to unite esteemed legal professionals, technologists, policymakers, and academics to explore AI's transformative potential within India's judicial system. Participants presented abstracts and engaged in discussions that illuminated AI's legal implications, its impacts on various legal practices, and the evolving challenges and opportunities within the techno-legal domain.

Further insights were shared by Shri Shailesh Tripathi, Director of the Commercial Channel at HP India, who highlighted AI's constructive contributions to the legal field. Shri Ashok Kumar, Former IPS Officer and DGP, underscored AI's applications across sectors like agriculture and law enforcement, especially in cybercrime prevention and deepfake mitigation. Dr. Raghavender GR, Former Joint Secretary at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), provided an overview of large language models and their impact on intellectual property, AI hallucinations, and recent innovations by NITI Aayog, Vidhi, and Daksh. Dr. Rajiv Bajpai, Faculty Member at IIIT Lucknow, discussed balancing AI innovation with responsibility and stressed human intervention in ethical AI application. Special Guest Padmesh Mishra, Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, elaborated on AI's role in promoting equal justice through tools like natural language processing and predictive analysis.

Concluding the event, Dr. Ajay Sonawane, Program Director, extended Vote of thanks to the organizing committee, including Prof. (Dr.) Anupam Jha, Prof. (Dr.) Anju Vali Tikoo, and Dr. Ashutosh Acharya. The organizing committee also acknowledged the efforts of student volunteers in facilitating the event. The event proved to be a resounding success, equipping participants with valuable insights into the ethical integration of AI within legal fields.
