Supreme Court Orders BCI to Permit Final-Year Law Students in AIBE XIX Registration
The Supreme Court permits final-year law students to appear for AIBE, the qualifying exam for legal practice, scheduled for November 24, 2024
The Hon'ble Supreme Court of India has directed the Bar Council of India (BCI) to allow final-year law students to register for the upcoming All India Bar Examination (AIBE XIX), scheduled for November 24, 2024. A bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, issued an interim order in response to a petition challenging the Bar Council of India's (BCI) recent notification on AIBE exam eligibility (Nilay Rai v. Bar Council of India and Ors).
This ruling brings major relief to law students on the verge of completing their legal education and aspiring to start their legal practice without delays.
The AIBE is a certification exam conducted by the BCI to assess a law graduate’s competence to practice law. Traditionally, only those who had completed their LL.B. degree and enrolled with a State Bar Council were eligible to apply. Upon successfully passing the exam, candidates are awarded a Certificate of Practice, which is mandatory for entering the legal profession in India.
Final-year law students can now register for the examination. These students will be required to furnish proof of their status as final-year candidates through relevant documentation from their respective law colleges.
The registration process is currently open. The Bar Council of India has introduced a new examination center in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, starting from the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) XIX and for future exams.
- Final-year law students can now apply for AIBE XIX, even if their degree is not yet awarded.
- Registration is available on the official AIBE website (Click Here).
- Students must submit all necessary documents, including certification from their law colleges, confirming their final-year status.
This decision ensures that law students can begin their legal practice without undue delays, helping them move forward in their professional journey.
