Kargil Vijay Diwas | July 26th
Kargil Vijay Diwas, also known as Kargil Victory Day, is an important commemorative day in India observed on July 26th each year. It marks the successful conclusion of the Kargil War between India and Pakistan, which took place from May to July 1999.
The Kargil War was an armed conflict that occurred in the Kargil district of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir. The conflict arose when Pakistani troops and militants infiltrated across the Line of Control (LOC), the de facto border between India and Pakistan, and occupied strategic positions in the high-altitude mountains of Kargil.
The Indian Armed Forces, upon discovering the intrusion, launched a large-scale military operation named "Operation Vijay" to evict the intruders and reclaim the occupied territories. The Indian troops exhibited immense courage, resilience, and determination while fighting in treacherous terrain and harsh weather conditions.
After nearly three months of intense fighting, the Indian forces successfully recaptured the infiltrated areas, and Pakistan was compelled to withdraw its troops from Kargil. The conflict ended on July 26, 1999, and India declared victory, which is celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas.
Kargil Vijay Diwas is a solemn occasion to honour the sacrifices made by the Indian soldiers during the war and to pay tribute to the valiant heroes who laid down their lives in the line of duty. It serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit of the Indian Armed Forces and the nation's commitment to safeguarding its territorial integrity. On this day, various ceremonies, parades, and events are organized throughout the country to remember and honour the gallant soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect their motherland.
