Prayagraj, 28th March 2025 – Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University (RPNLU), Prayagraj has taken a pioneering step toward enhancing academic dialogue with the launch of its Weekly Faculty Discussion Series. This initiative is aimed at cultivating a robust academic environment through regular interdisciplinary engagement among faculty members.
First Session Highlights: A Discourse by Prof. (Dr.) Usha Tandon
The inaugural session was graced and led by the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor, Senior Professor (Dr.) Usha Tandon, who delivered a thought-provoking presentation on the topic “The Complexities of Protection and Allegations of Abuse in the Context of Workplace Sexual Harassment of Women.”
Prof. Tandon’s insightful discourse offered a comprehensive analysis of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013 (POSH Act). She explained its key provisions, employer obligations, and the institutional role of Internal Complaints Committees (ICC) in creating a safe and equitable workplace environment.
Interpreting the Law: Legal Framework and Global Alignment
Drawing from both legal scholarship and practical implications, Prof. Tandon discussed how the POSH Act aligns with international mandates, especially the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). She highlighted the Act’s relevance in institutionalizing mechanisms to safeguard women against workplace harassment.
The Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor also reviewed judicial interpretations over the past decade, presenting landmark judgments that have influenced the Act’s enforcement and clarified its scope. Importantly, she addressed the ongoing debate over false or malicious complaints, emphasizing the need for balancing protective intent with procedural fairness.
Interactive Discussion Among Faculty Members
Following the presentation, the session transitioned into an interactive faculty discussion, where participants shared their perspectives on gender-protective legislation and its practical challenges. Faculty members critically reflected on case studies and judicial provocations, reinforcing the continued need for legal and institutional reforms.
The dialogue also explored how such laws impact real-world workplace dynamics, and the importance of ongoing awareness and training to ensure effective implementation and justice.
Towards a Culture of Academic Excellence
The Weekly Faculty Discussion Series is envisioned as a long-term academic platform at RPNLU, encouraging faculty members to present research, debate legal issues, and engage in interdisciplinary exploration. With its first session setting a high scholarly benchmark, RPNLU is committed to nurturing a space that contributes meaningfully to contemporary legal and social challenges.
This initiative is another stride in RPNLU’s mission to promote critical thinking, collaborative scholarship, and academic leadership.
