Delhi, 27th October 2024 — The Indian Society of International Law concluded its 10th International Conference on International Law, uniting global legal experts to address pressing issues like climate change, trade, and international humanitarian law. The three-day event emphasized the need for enhanced international cooperation to tackle today’s complex legal challenges.

Inaugural Session and Keynote Address by Justice N. Kostiwar Singh

The event was inaugurated by Hon’ble Justice N. Kostiwar Singh, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, who underscored India's pivotal role in shaping the future of international law. Justice Singh advocated for a rules-based international order to promote global peace, justice, and sustainability. His address highlighted critical topics such as climate change and international trade law, areas increasingly relevant to the global legal landscape. Justice Singh praised ISIL’s efforts in organizing the conference and emphasized the importance of integrating international law into India’s education and policymaking.

Welcoming Dignitaries and Addressing Legal Education

In his welcome address, Amb. Narinder Singh, Secretary-General of ISIL, expressed gratitude for the presence of distinguished attendees and reiterated the importance of such conferences in facilitating global dialogue on international law. He praised ISIL’s longstanding commitment to promoting legal research and international law capacity-building. Shri P.H. Parekh, President of ISIL, also addressed the conference, discussing the need for continuous academic collaboration to ensure that international law adapts to the rapidly evolving global environment.

Special Addresses on International Humanitarian and Private International Law

Notable speakers included Mr. Kedir Awol Omar, Head of Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who emphasized the relevance of the Four Geneva Conventions in modern conflicts and the importance of disseminating International Humanitarian Law (IHL). Dr. Christophe Bernasconi, Secretary-General of the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH), highlighted Private International Law’s role in ensuring justice and cooperation across borders.

Discussions on Emerging International Law Themes

The conference witnessed a record participation, with over 200 abstracts submitted on diverse themes, including human rights law, trade and investment law, climate change, space law, and cyber law. Panel discussions led by renowned legal scholars and professionals, such as Prof. Anju Vali Tikoo from Delhi University and Dr. Shibani Ghosh from the Centre for Science and Environment, fostered robust debates. Hon’ble Justice Madan B. Lokur, former Supreme Court Judge, and Dr. Pavan Duggal, cyber law expert, among others, steered discussions that emphasized the adaptability of international law in addressing complex, modern-day challenges.

A Call for Deeper International Collaboration and Legal Innovation

The conference concluded with a renewed call for international cooperation to adapt international law for emerging areas such as cyber law, space law, and environmental justice. In his vote of thanks, Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor of Dharmashastra National Law University, acknowledged the contributions of all speakers and encouraged the legal community to further the practical implementation of international law.
